This question should be directed to a sleep medicine physician. I am a dentist who helps with the treatment of obstructive sleep apnea through the fabrication of oral appliances.
Multiple parameters are measured during a routine sleep study- brain waves, breathing, muscle activity and some other. Sleep studies help physicians to diagnose or rule out a specific condition. There should be a question to be answered when a sleep study is ordered and the referring physician is the doctor who asks that question based on specific complaints and symptoms coming from his or her patient. Therefore it is difficult to list all medical conditions that can be diagnosed with a sleep study. Sleep apnea, periodic limb movements in sleep, REM sleep behavior disorder, and narcolepsy are among conditions when a sleep study may be helpful.
