What are proper treatments for hypersomnia?

I used to sleep very late at night (around 4am) and wake up around 8am or 9am. But recently, I have not been able to sleep at all at night and end up sleeping during the day. I'm scared of taking sleeping pills. What do you recommend I do?

This does not sound like hypersomnia, but rather a circadian cycle sleep disorder. Your sleep- wake cycle shifted forward and probably interfere with your daytime activities. I suggest that you fill out a 2 week sleep diary to confirm your diagnosis. You may download it here: http://yoursleep.aasmnet.org/pdf/sleepdiary.pdf. You need to see a sleep specialist to discuss your treatment options (most likely you will not need any medications). Look for a local sleep center preferably with psychologist on staff. Best of luck to you.

Thank you for asking about treatments. The first thing to do is rule out certain sleep disorders. If indeed you have your days and nights turned around that involves your 24 hour Circadian Rhythm. I am not suggestion Melatonin, as I am not a physician. However, many people use Melatonin as a sleep aid and it is considered very mild. You should keep yourself on a strict sleep wake cycle. Do not sleep during the day. Reserve your bedroom for sleep. Do not eat meals or watch TV in your room, as that creates bad habits. If you do not fall asleep until 2 am, go ahead and get up at the preset time of awakening or arising. In some instances, following these sleep hygiene tools, you can correct this issue. If this doesn't work, remember to consult a Board Certified Sleep Physician.
