About one out of every two heavy snorers.
There are no statistics for how many snorers have sleep apnea. If, however, you can hear someone snore from another room the odds for having sleep apnea are high (around 90%).
We know that between 30-50% of persons will snore at some time. Now, that is not habitual snoring or nightly snoring and about 8% of males have sleep apnea-although I personally think these are old data and need to be updated as the incidence is much higher. Now, if you snore-have been told you have breathing pauses in sleep-wake up unrefreshed or with morning headaches, it is very likely you have sleep apnea. Also, other associated factors: neck circumference larger than 17 inches in males and 16 inches in females and high body weight. Although I must say some of my patients with severe sleep apnea have been athletic, slim, young woman. So, everyone is really at risk with these symptoms.
The incidence of sleep apnea in snorers is 94%. Therefore, you are at a greater risk of stroke, heart attack, heart disease and diabetes.
